Last season, the Lafayette High School Dance team went out of their comfort zone to not only compete in their usual 5A Varsity Game Day division, but also the 3A-5A Varsity Jazz division. This was the first time Lafayette Dance has brought two teams to the MHSAA State Championship, and this decision paid off.
The Varsity Game Day team placed third, and the Varsity Jazz team came out on top as state champions. This was the first time Lafayette Dance has won a state championship in the varsity division. Not only did the jazz team win state, but they also went undefeated the entire season.
Senior dance captain Kate Riddle shared, “We put in the work. We all train at Oxford Elite Dance Company anywhere from 20-30 hours a week, as well as having eight hour choreography days and having two girls on the soccer team. This season we made it our motto to remember to stay in control of our movement so we can all dance together as a team. It’s been a long time coming! I’m hoping for round two this year at state. We’re all in.”
Friday, September 6th, the Jazz team received their state championship rings during halftime of a Lafayette Football Game. State championship dancers include, Swayze Knight, Lila Kate Sealy, Allie Flanders, Zaria Houston, Molly Riddle, Natalie Blair, and Kate Riddle.
According to Riddle, “The ultimate dream is winning double state titles. When I was in 7th grade, we won JV Game Day at state, so being able to come back as a senior and win in the Varsity division would be such a full circle moment.”
